otago & Southland Region

5th October 2016 - 22nd October 2016

Being advised that we were employed at the Top10 Franz Josef, we were given three week's chance to continue touring around the South Island, and head back to start working. Driving past Fox Glacier, Haast, and Lake Wanaka, we decided to do the Canyon Swing whilst in Queenstown, Extreme Sports Capital of the World, then continued our way down South, passing by Glenorchy and what's Rated as the Most Scenic Drive. Heading to Te Anau, we visited Fiordland National Park, caught a cruise tour, then headed to Invercargill. After visiting the museum of the Great Indian bike, we headed to Bluff, then the southernmost tip of New Zealand – Slope Point. Viewing penguins along the way, we passed Dunedin, climbed the steepest residential hill, and drove to Oamaru – Steampunk Capital of the World where we got to see the Little Penguins in the Wild!
Day getting closer to our job, we decided to start making our way back up to Franz Josef, and after visiting Steampunk HQ, headed to Taman Glacier National Park, Christchurch, Arthurs Pass, and onto the West Coast through Hokitika, sleeping our last night in the car!

Diary

          Day604

Having Lorraine make us some toast with ham and cheese, and some crumpets, unfortunately had to say our goodbyes, and around 11:00 went separate ways. Raining heavy, we drove back 22kms towards Top 10 Franz Josef. Meeting Melissa and touring us around the area (rain stopped now!), we were advised she just needed to get back to us regarding accommodation, however we were hired. Advising start date would be beginning of November, we said we would still manage to fit our travels beforehand. Hoping for the best, at 12:35 we set off! Sun finally out, we drove South. Passing Fox Glacier, our first stop was Bruce Bay Beach, then Lake Moeraki and Knights Point Lookout.

15:10 South West NZ Heritage Area. Driving past Haast, we started driving alongside the Mount Aspiring National Park. Beautiful mountains tips covered in snow, we first stopped for a secret hidden waterfall gem, Depot Creek Waterfalls, then after a few stops along the SH6 for some gorgeous shots, stopped by Pleasant Flat Campsite to cook some dinner at around 17:10. Making Fettucine with some salad and bbq sauce, after being attacked by midges, we finally set off continuing our trip. A few scenic shots later, and stopping by Robinsons Creek, Haast Pass Bridge and Lookout, we stopped a few mins into Lake Wanaka around 19:40, along Boundary Creek Campsite, with gorgeous views of snowy maintains and calm lake (not enough for a mirror effect), and after setting up the bed and paid $6 per person, hit to bed amongst the amazing photogenic scenery.

          Day605

A chilly morning, we ate some porridge, and at 09:02 set off! Lucky to have a beautiful day, we passed by Lake Wanaka Lookout, then arrived at the Neck, and started driving along Lake Hawea. A scenic drive with a few lookout stops, we continued our way to the village of Lake Wanaka. Some reception and wifi finally, we decided to keep driving down to Queenstown to enjoy the beautiful day at the extreme sports capital! Quickly stopping by New World for some quick bread, we headed out through Cardrona.

12:10 What a gem! Driving past a town surrounded by surreal landscape and snow capped mountains, we stopped by Shotover Canyon Swing, and booked ourselves an adventure for 15:30 ($229). Touring around to find free parking, we walked in Fresh Choice for some Hersheys chocolate, North Face, and walked around the busy Shotover Street. Walking in the shop at 15:15, weighed ourselves (Kirsten 51.2kgs and Leon 72.3kgs), got our wristbands and started watching the adrenaline videos. Being driven by Jack to the Canyon, 10mins, getting agitated and excited, we walked 200m and arrived at our doom - the 109m cliff drop and swing. After a few briefs and safety guidelines (which say its a crazy thing to jump off a cliff!) we were lead to the jumping point. Harnesses on, Kirsten went first. Terrified, a few minutes later got pushed over! A 3-sec freefall but felt a life-long, Leon went next, both doing the Forward swing, with a beautiful scenery and cloudless sky! Attempting another Tandem Jump together, Gimpy goes to Hollywood, hanging upside down and being dropped, we survived the second jump (an extra $45). Being given a free T Shirt, and bought our Tandem pics and multi-shot for $25 (originally $50 but got a 50% discount for marketing), and being given our personal jumps for free as well, we started making our way back. Woooooow!

Picking up Kirsten's new shoes, now 17:40 we stopped by Fresh Produce, and started making our way to tonight's campsite - Bendigo. Driving past Gibbston Highway, we arrived an hour later, and made some Fusilli with Chicken and Tomato Sauce. Still feeling pumped and watching the pics and videos, we somehow managed to sleep after the sun set, around 21:00.

         Day606

Beautiful weather once again!

Cooked some Oats, at 09:12 we set off back North up to Wanaka. Chilling by Lake Wanaka, we walked along Ardmore Street, and around the town and shops. Sitting on a bench with the view of Mount Aspiring Ranges, we made some bread with chicken, sulking up the sun. Falling in love with this area! Driving up to the Library, we charged the devices, then decided to drive around with the car around the Lake.

16:10 Heading to Albert Town, we drove to the Camping Ground, and cooked some Fusilli with Chicken in Tomato Sauce, and enjoying feeding the ducks. Deciding it was too early to hit the road to sleep, we drove back down to Wanaka, used some internet, and headed to New World to buy some beer. A race against sun down, we started driving South towards Bendigo Campsite again, arriving at 20:36, fully packed this time, opened the Bavaria pint beers, and watched Warcraft till we fell asleep.

          Day607

Woke up late at 08:50, we lazyed in, and around 10:00 set off to Queenstown. Stopping by Cromwell, we walked in New World, then headed towards Alpha Street and cooked some brunch - Oats with oranges and biscuits. Taking it slow, we received a call from Lorraine that they will be at Queenstown, and started the Journey West. An hour drive, we diverted from along the SH6 onto an unsealed road to reach the end of Lake Wakatipu, the shot of River Anduin with the two king statues of Argonath from the LOTR. Continuing the drive, we stopped by Saint Omer Park around 13:40 along the Lake Esplanade and met up with the travelling Maltese and Scottish. Catching up, around 15:26 we departed ways for the final time, and we set on a 44km drive along whats Rated as the World's Most Scenic Drive - Tommy Thomson. Picturesque landscape with clear skies, we drove up to Glenorchy, and stopped by the small General Store. Deciding to walk around the Glenorchy Lagoon (4.56km), we enjoyed the landscape and beautiful weather, then around 18:00 started heading back down, viewing Mountain Goats along the way. Quickly stopping by Frankton for New World, we realised we still had an hour and 20 mins for the campsite, and was a race against darkness. Passing by The Remarkables and the rugged dramatic mountain-scape, we stopped for Dinner at Drift Bay along Lake Wakatipu. Making Rigatoni with Beef Kidney and Eggs, we realised we will miss much of the scenery driving at night, therefore after much debating, we decided to drive back up 77kms to Bendigo Campsite once again. Stopping by Mcdonalds for a soft serve, we drive to the Campsite, many bunny crossings, now 23:12 after setting up the bed and drinking a beer, set to sleep.

          Day608

Departing at 09:30, greyish skies, we drove to Cromwell to fuel up and buy food from New World, then headed down towards The Remarkables. Arriving around 10:40, we set up on a 13km very steep uphill onto the beautiful mountain ranges. Having to stop just after 7km, car overheating, we finally had to stop driving just after the 10th km due to gravel road and the heating of the car. Still a spectacular view, we started making our way down the Ranges, and started heading towards Te Anau! Stopping along the Devils Stairway's Lookout, we set driving past hills and farmlands, emus, deers, cows and sheep. Along the SH6, and onto SH97, we arrived at Te Anau around 16:20, very windy and cloudy weather. Walking in the DOC centre, we learned that the road to Milford Sound will be closed during the night and tomorrow morning, heavy wind and snow on the mountains predicted. Feeling disappointed, we drove around town, and still booked $45 (instead of $90) cruise tour of the Milfords for Wednesday, hoping for the best, through Bookme with GoOrange. Driving to Te Anau Terrace, alongside the Te Anau Lake, we cooked Spaghetti with Minced Meat and Tomato Sauce in the car due to the very heavy wind, then after stopping by Fresh Choice, started making our way down to the campsite. Taking a wrong turn, we finally arrived next to the Waiau River, played some cards, then still some light at 21:05, headed to bed, hoping not to get blown away with the heavy wind. (293km for the day since Cromwell).

          Day609

09:41 Departed from the Campsite, and the rain has not stopped since late yesterday night. Driving towards Te Anau, we stopped by the Wildlife Centre - Bird Sancuary. Viewing the Kākā (Forest Parrot), Antipodes Island Parakeets, Tauhou (Silvereye), Pāleke (Brown Teal), Mallard, Putangitangi (Paradise Shelduck) and Pārera (Grey duck). Checking the weather for the Milford Sound, unfortunately the weather will not open up, and the road still remains closed. Having another update at 16:30, and not having much to do, we ate some brunch - Weetabix with milk purchased at Fresh Choice ($1.60 for a litre of homogenized), then visited the Library. Receiving amazing news that we got accepted for the Top10 Franz Josef Reception/Housekeeping job, aroun 15:00 we departed back to Te Anau Domain, and cooked Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce and Minced Meat for dinner in the car. Checked the updated road condition, ot was still closed due to severe avalanche hazards, and headed to the GoOrange office in order to see what our options were. Advising we need to be there just in case the road opens at 07:30, we fuelled up, and headed out! (Rain still pouring).

17:45 0km Started the journey from Te Anau towards Milford Sound.

18:05 26km Henry Creek.

18:07 30km Lake Mistletoe.

18:07 31km Te Anau Downs.

18:23 51km Walker Creek along the Eglington River, and entered Fjordland NP.

18:25 54km Took a break at Totara. Rain still hasn't stopped.

18:33 55km Mackay Creek

18:38 60km Mirror Lakes.

18:40 64km Deer Flat. 45degrees South Lattitude!

18:42 66km Knobs Flat and Kiosk Creek.

18:50 74km Upper Eglington. Finding a good place on the gravel, we played some cards, and somehow managed to set up the bed due to the heavy rain, paid the $6 per person for the campsite, set alarms, and hoped best for the weather to clear up and the road to be opened for tomorrow!

          Day610

Rain stopped at midnight. Weather opening up.

07:05 74km Left Upper Eglinton Campsite. Snow on the mountains, and frost along the road.

07:11 80km Cascade Creek.

07:16 85km Lake Gunn. Altitude 480m.

07:19 88km The Divide.

07:23 91km Marian Corner. Waiting for the gate to open - hopefully.

07:36 Advised road won't open as a controlled bombing will need to be run for avalanche testing. Unfortunately, we made our way down to a rest area.

08:06 98km Lake Gunn again. Making some Weetabix and coffee to warm ourselves up, at 09:46 we departed. Sun out!

09:53 104km Cascade Creek. Walked 2.4km Lake Gunn Nature Walk.

11:13 Arrived at the Gate hoping the 12:30 update will be an earlier one to catch the later cruise (12:30). Meeting a guy from NSW who advised there will be helicopters doing the hazards, at...

11:35 ROAD OPEN!

12:03 138km The Chasm. Passing through Homer's Tunnel, a 1.2km long tunnel through the mountains, which was built in 1937.

12:11 147km Milford Sound - Piopiotahi! Sunny weather. Passing through beautiful snowy and dramatic landscape, we parked at the car park, 10mins walk to the terminal and it started to rain! Being advised the cruise will run at 13:30, we chilled outdoors and set off at 13:35.

- Viewing the highest waterfall at 161m high, and drove beneath the second largest at 154m being sprinkled with freshwater.

- The huge Mitre Peak.

- As the freshwater is on top of the Sea, and keeps the sun rays out, it provides an illusion at just 8m that the water is 100m deep, so the fish get fooled.

- Viewed seals, and the second rarest penguins in the world, called Fiordlands (and a dolphin which didn't want to jump out of the water).

- Narrowest at 500m, and deep 300m.

- Gets the most rainfall in whole NZ which is up to 7-9metres per year.

Unfortunately, after 2hours later, sun and rain, complimentary fish and chips, Leon's accidental bell ring, and freshest water from the area, we arrived at the terminal.

15:47 Departed back down. Stopping by a 1km circuit walk along the Chasm, and seeing Kea's up close, we stopped by Mirror Lakes at 17:30 which unfortunately the weather did not permit for the effect.

18:26 263km Te Anau. Driving by Fresh Choice, we then drove off to the Domain, sunny once again, and cooked some Spaghetti with Eggs and Chipolatas, then after sun down, we drove off to Spark for some internet, and after finally rescuing Kirsten's mob from a complete clean, drove 31kms to arrive at the carpark next to Waiau River around 12:37 to sleep for the night.

          Day611

Rain stopped after a night of pour on rain, at 09:45 we departed from the campsite. Reaching Clifden for a stretch and a look at a historical Suspension Bridge 45mins later, we made some breakfast - Oats with Crushed Muesli and Peach Yoghurt, then continued our way. Stopping by McCrackens Rest, and Monkey Island Lookout, we drove right into Invercargill. Stopping by a toilet block for a $1 shower, around 15:15 headed to SuperCheap Auto to change the fuel filter, then headed to E.Hayes & Sons Warehouse. Home to the famous world's fastest Indian bike, we viewed information on Burt Munro, the bike used for the film, tens of other bikes and cars exhibition, and screenings of the race - all for free! Getting late, we drove around town to see if we could find any shelter from the rain, then headed out back to Thornbury Campsite. Stopping by Countdown, we arrived at around 18:00, and managed to cook in the car, sheltering from the rain. Making Penne with Tomato Sauce and Chipolatas, we chilled in the car, then hit to bed around 21:30, still raining.

          Day612

A sunny day! Departing from the campsite at 09:16, we made our way back to Invercargill. Fuelling up, and stopping by Countdown, we visited the Museum right beside the Queens Park, and viewed many Maori artifacts, arts, old customs, bridal dresses, and tried spotting the Tuatara behind a glass (only viewed it's tail!). Driving to the Demolition World, a family's hobby of building a town replica from unsold demolition stuff. A donation entry, we walked into buildings with mannequins, all arranged to look like a butcher, hairdressers, bar, playground, a wedding ceremony, houses and a hospital. Such originality!

Already 11:30, we drove South to Bluff, Sterling Point, second Southest Point in NZ mainland. Having a picture with a sign post, we started making our way East. Passing Fortrose and Waikawa, we stopped by Purpoise Bay and 16kms unsealed towards Slope Point - the Southest Point of the Mainland NZ (Equator 5140km and South Pole 4803km). After a 10minute walk, a few pictures, and hair flying everywhere, we continued our journey. Continuing driving along the Catlins Scenic Drive, we stopped by Papatowai Campsite. Shelter and a kitchen, we cooked x8 cheese sausages for a hot dog, with omelette and baked beans, then slowly started continuing our way around 17:30. Driving along Owaka (and viewing a garden with over a hundred teapots!), and headed to Nugget Point, an unsealed road along the shore, and got to a small viewing shelter. Seeing our first Yellow- Eyed Penguin, we saw a total of 3! Getting dark, at 19:15 we continued our way, up past Balclutha, and onto Ocean View, viewing 'The Sod Cottage', a cottage in the middle of the highway which showcases what an 1860 house used to look like from inside, then stopped by Waihola Reserve to fill up our water bottles and tank. Arriving just after 20:30, we found a good spot where to park, settled in, and set for a good night's sleep next to the beach shore.

          Day613

Waking up to pure sunshine bliss again! Departing at 08:30, we made our way into Dunedin. And what stress! Traffic and weird road signs again! And all paid parking! Heading to Countdown, Pak n Save, The Warehouse and fuelling up, we finally drove to North Dunedin, St. David Street for unlimited parking around 11:11. Walking to Family Store, we bought some 'decent' clothes for the new job (one pants costing 50c!), then headed down to the main streets to Meridian Mall, and visited K-Mart and others. Buying a slush from McDonalds, we headed out to Baldwin Street in Opoho, we walked 350m up along the steepest Residential street in the world! Heading out to Nicoll's Waterfall, we returned back to the car unfortunately when we found the track to be steep and muddy. A glorious sunny day (viewing many students sunbathing, and throwing Saturday parties in the streets, infront of houses and on rooftops!) we headed down South towards the Otaga Peninsula, passing by Musselburgh, Waverley, and Ocean Grove. Deciding to head to St Clair beach lookout over a hill, we parked at the side amongst other families and cooked a delicious plate of Spaghetti with Fried Egg and Bacon, enjoying the sun and many seagulls. Relaxing till 18:00ish, we drove back up to the Centre, stopped by Pak N Save for a special treat lunch for tomorrow (Tortellini!) and bought a very similar taste to Nutella called Nutino 750g for just $5.99! Driving towards a Wi-fi spot, around 20:40, sundown, we drove out of Dunedin and around 30kms North towards Warrington Domain, the free campsite set for tonight's rest around 21:15.

          Day614

Slightly cloudy, we had an easy morning and departed at 10:15. Driving along the Coastal Road, crossing many train tracks and views of beach, we stopped by Puketeraki Lookout, then along the Huriawa Beach Reserve. Having a break at Palmerston, and bought some mushrooms for 99c at Four Square, we continued our way.

12:25 Shag Point. Walking to a seagull colony and a seal colony (but no penguins in sight), we continued driving to another penguin stop, Katiki Point. Viewing more stinky seals, and sitting behind a viewing platform (no luck once again), we drove back out and onto Hampden. Stopping by Four Square, we bought a HUGE two-scoop ice-cream of cookies and cream, and boysenberry for just $3, and continued the road up North towards Oamaru - Steampunk Capital. Arriving at 14:25, we drove towards the Marine Parade, and viewed an unusual fair - travelling gypsies, which perform - the Extravaganza which was being held this weekend at the Victorian Precinct. Watching trailers selling hand-made clothes, bracelets and other stuff, tarot-readings, a family performing acrobats, live music, background music and people dressed up in Steampunk. What an atmosphere! After spending some good time at the Playground, swings made of brass and iron, sculptured into old things, and seeing the old steam train going, we started getting hungry.

Driving towards Robert's Park, we cooked Tortellini with Bacon and Carbonara, chilled abit around town, then once dusk hit, we headed our way towards the Harbour, in hope to view the blue penguins. Waiting patiently (around an hour), by 21:00, now dark, luck was on our side! Seeing one, two, three... Small blue penguins, trying to cross. Learning that they used to cross the road where cars and people by-pass but were getting disturbed by flashes, the volunteers and university students helped built an underground tunnel as a safer alternative. Being disappointed by the fact humans keep coming their way and that we were not going to see them cross the road, it was a very good idea to be supporting the crossing differently. Towards 22:30, they did however open the gate and saw one crossing, and on our way back another one hiding in the grass! Total of 15 for sure! Getting late, we started driving 25kms North towards Waitaki River Campsite, and finally slept for the night.
          Day615
Such beautiful weather! Heading back down to Oamaru, we headed to Countdown and New World, bought Sugarbuns (x2) for 99c, and around 10:25 headed to the booked Steampunk HQ! Meeting Jan, the wonderful receptionist, we walked through the doors, and were astonished at the set-up. All machinery was donated by the town which was actually used in the old days, we played the Metagalactic Pipe Piano with a twist, and viewed other post-apocalyptic items made of brass and iron, and quite a few artwork of the local artist Chris Meder, also 'The Lonely Emperor', 'Guardian of Astraea', 'Doomsday Clock', the amazing 'Portal' with lights, and and outdoor Junkyard, with a train, bike, and other war-related apocalyptic. Being shown the 'Room Below' as special guests, with a small projector and the sense of imprisonment, we left after a good time talking with the owners. Fuelling up, at 12:30 we made our way inland. Stopping by Elephant Rocks, huge boulders in the middle of the greenery landscape, and Takiroa, whats left of the Maori art on stone, we drove past Kurow, viewed the Waitaki Dam overflowing due to the wind, then drove by Otematata and Omarama and Ahuriri Bridge. Finally no wind, but so hot, we cooked some 800g Peppered Rump Steak, with fried mushrooms and Chicken Herb Sausages, snacked on some packet and drank a beer. Delicious! Around 16:30, we headed up to Twizel, toured around the city, then headed to Lake Pukaki Campsite, past the blue Lake Ruataniwha. Playing some cards, very windy once again, weather getting clouder and darker, we set up the bed, watched the sun set around 20:10, and enjoyed the splashes of the Lake before we went to sleep.
          Day616
Having to leave the spot where we parked at 02:15 due to the high winds and heavy rocking, we drove down to a more sheltered area, amongst several other cars who had the same thought. Still very windy in the morning, we decided to drive off then sort the back of the car in a quieter place. Seeing the engine light on in the car, it troubled us, and decided to head back down to Twizel and see what the problem was. An hour later at Auto & Marine Services (just 15minutes of labour however), we walked out with a $100 less in our pocket, and just a 'nothing major just the knock sensor playing up'. Started to drive once again, we decided to head to Mount Cook National Park on this fine sunny day. Passing by the fields, and viewing Pelennor Fields (LOTR movie location where the third age battle took place), we drove along Lake Pukaki, stopping by Peters Lookout, and onto Mount Cook Village. A beautiful drive along the SH80, up towards the Tasman Glacier Car Park. Making some sausages for breakfast with mushrooms and onions in bread, we decided to head towards the 3hour glacier walk, however as soon as we got to the area, it was very misty and was raining heavily. Checking out the showers (too cold as water was the Glacier's), we headed back to the Tasman Carpark around 13:50, and walked 650m steep uphill of steps to get to the wonderful Mount Cook lookout and the melted ice onto the valley! Raining but extremely hot and sunny, we started driving back down towards Twizel, passing the turquoise lake again, and after fuelling up, hit the road again. Passing Lake Tekapo, we viewed the Church of the Good Shepherd, and the Dog Monument, and had a small break at Fairlie. Getting late around 18:30, and still 40kms to go, we started driving on gravel and ungravel, finally arriving at Waitohi Bush Reserve at 19:07, started cooking Penne with Tomato Sauce and Rump Steak, and chilled playing some cards till it was too dark to see, and went to sleep.
          Day617
Heading out at around 09:20, we headed out to Timaru, past Pleasant Point, and headed to buy some breakfast from Pak N Save. Driving out to Caroline Bay, we made some Oats, then deciding on the fact it was a beautiful sunny and warm day, to make use of the outdoor showers available. Chilling till past noon, we headed out to Countdown, bought food for lunch, fuelled up, and continued our way towards Christchurch. Stopping by Ashburton, we continued to Chamberlains Ford Recreation Reserve and arrived around 16:30. Quite packed with people, we made some delicious plate of Fettucine Carbonara, with added milk and Chicken, then played some cards, relaxed, and once it got dark, watched Money Monsters and hit to bed.
          Day618
Having to wake up early at 07:30, we quickly made some Weetabix breakfast and (still raining since early morning), heading out to Christchurch. Driving to Waltham, we took our car to Mechanic on Grafton, and met Sam who had our car booked in for a service. 45minutes later and just $59 (discount through bookme), we found out the mechanic was very friendly and honest, advised what was ideal that the car needs changing, and left at around 10:30, heading towards Eastgate. Stopping by The Warehouse to exchange the tablet as the keyboard was playing up, Countdown, then did a huge shopping ($43!) at Pak N Save, getting ready for the Franz Josef. Heading towards the Library in Aranui, we spent a good hour and a half, hoping for the rain to stop, then at 17:00 quickly left and went to Dominoes for the ordered pizzas! Parking at New Brighton park, we ate the delicious $4.99 Pizzas - Beef and Caramelised Onions, and Pepperoni, both with free spring onions, basil and Parmegian cheese. Feeling crazy all day (Leon pressing the alarm button at The Warehouse, bumping his head and dropping a sign in Countdown, singing loudly and using number plates as lyrics to songs), we headed to Countdown for some Date Scones (could barely eat a crumble), then started heading towards the Campsite - Coes Ford in Leeston (close to where we slept yesterday), and after playing some cards, and having the girl next to us smiling and waving at us all the time, watched Green Room, and went to sleep.
          Day619
Rain hasn't stopped! Occasionally calming down, we had a lazy-in, and at 09:50 headed towards Rollestone. Buying some fruit salad from New World, at 11:30 drove to the Domain, cooked some Oats, and started the way to the Franz Josef! 13:02 Started the SH73, Arthurs Pass way! Taking a picture of the monumental donut at Springfield (dedicated to the Simpsons), we continued our journey. Weather finally calmed down, but still grey skies, we continued driving towards Castle Hill Conservation Area, viewed the magnificent huge boulders, quickly ate some oranges and grapefruit, and continued onto Lake Pearson. Passing by the Arthurs Pass Sign, we stopped by Klondyke Corner around 16:00, and somehow managed to cook and eat some Fettucine with Tomato Sauce and Tenderised Beef amongst the hundreds of sandflies surrounding us. Weather stable, we drove onto the following campsite at Greyneys Shelter, and spent a good evening playing cards, relaxing, and talking with the Welsh John and German Miriam about travels and New Zealand in the -2degrees cold weather!
          Day620
Having people parking right next to us last night, we ate some breakfast Oats with Fruit Salad, and departed around 10:20. Arriving at the Village of Arthur's Pass, we stopped by the town first, then headed towards Devils Punchbowl Walking Track. 2.68kms return (and 322steps!) to view a Maori Spiritual Waterfall, and and an old powerhouse. Departing at 12:56, we continued our way on the West Coast Road onto Deaths Corner Lookout, Tunnel Lookout, and towards Deception Valley. Passing by Kumara, we got to the West Coast, and started driving down to Hokitika. Stopping by New World, we then stopped by Gibson Quay along the beach for some Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce and Tenderised Beef. With no real plans for the rest of the evening as we had already passed from here before, we drove around the city, made use of some internet, fuelled up, and around 20:15 headed out to the Woodstock Hotel (Woody's). Paying $5 per person to sleep in the car, we walked in the pub, watched the All Blacks play against Australia (AIB won!), bought Lion Brown for $6.50, and a mixed platter of nuggets, Samosas, spring rolls, fish cakes and chips with sweet chilli sauce and sour cream for $12. Around 22:00, the pub closed, and went back to the car, watched 'Kill Your Friends' and hit to bed, potentially for the last time in the Nissan!
