Round Two!
North island

11th July 2016 - 17th September 2016

New Zealand Round Two! Departing from Brick Bay Farms on 11th July, we continued where we left off back in March! Passing by Auckland for a car service, we drove down to Te Aroha and met up with the lady who assisted us and supported us after we got robbed. Visiting Hobbiton (LOTR movie set), we set off on the adventure, Tauranga, to Rotorua, Lake Taupo, onto the Pacific Highway Coast towards East Cape, down to Gisborne, Napier and Hastngs, and onto Tongariro National Park, viewing more LoTR movie scenes. Crossed over to New Plymouth via the Forgotten Highway, then made our way down South onto Wellington, side-tracking onto Cape Palliser. Meeting a Maltese guy who offered to host us for a few days in Porirua (Wellington) till we me tup with the Consulate to take our biometrics for our passports, we found a volunteer job at a family's house in Raumati (Kapiti Coast) to kill some time, and waited for our new passports to be issued out before heading to the South Island!

Diary

          Day517
Adventure - 17months of travel!
Waking up at 06:45, we got everything out of the room by 07:20, to start refurbishing the bedrooms. Making some beans on toast, we finalised some things, then set off walking around the farm for one last time. Walking towards the Ting, and writing a Haiku, we walked all the way down to Brick Bay Beach, and up along the sculpture trail back up to the woolshed - 6.18kms.
12:00 - Made some toast, ate the last few stuff from the fridge (yogurt, jelly, peanut butter etc), then after saying our goodbyes to Brian, Annett, Chris, Sophie and Toby, at 13:22 departed out of the farm!
Heading to Caleb's House on the road down, we spent some time talking, and hit the road around 14:40. Stopping at Warkworth's library to print and scan Passport applications to be sent to the Maltese High Commission in Canberra.
We started driving along the SH1, we stopped by Waiwera, ate the lunch we made, then set the GPS to Riverhead to meet up with our host!
Arriving at around 17:30, we were welcomed by Ben, and Victor, German Josh, and two Malaysian girls - Ying and Bess. Spending the evening chatting, watching TV, and listening to Metal, we experienced our very first Couchsurfing experience, and slept on the sofa bed for the night.
          Day518
5degrees. Chilling at the house, at 09:55 moved some stuff into the house, and departed to Muriwai. Now 7degrees but sunny, we arrived at 10:50, and walked to the Gannet Colony lookout, viewing Motutara and Oaia Islands Ōtakamiro Point and what is left of the Gannets (Tākapu) amongst the rock holes for them to nest (up until 1970s nested the White Fronted Terns (Tara)).
41km drive to Bethells Beach. Black sand, surf waves and beautiful scenery. Walking along the shore, 45mins later drove to Massey at Pak N Save to buy some food.
Arriving at the hosts' house, we met two San Francisco girls who had just arrived to NZ in the morning, and sat down talking and drinking beer. Making some Fettuccine with Tomato Sauce and Pork (haven't had pork in such a long time!), we then were asked to get a ride to Devonport with Victor and Ben, and to drop off the two Americans. Getting to North Head Hill (Maungauika), we walked through the dark WWII tunnels, viewed the huge cannon, and sat down on top of the hill viewing the Auckland Skyline by night. So peaceful!
We got driven back around 21:20, and set up the sofa bed, chilled for a bit then got everything ready to depart tomorrow to Onehunga for the car service!
          Day519
By 08:35 (4degrees) we departed the house, and along the highway to Onehunga to 'Trafalgar Motors' to give the car a service. Walking around town in the meantime, we ate some packed lunch prepared by the Malaysian girls - Green Curry with Rice and Chicken, and ate donuts from Pak N Save ($1.49each). Visiting the Royal Oak Mall, at 11:00 walked back to the mechanic, paid $89 with a GrabOne Deal and at 11:25 hit the road!
Driving 133km to Te Aroha, neighbour to Karangahake Gorge, where we go robbed, to continue our journey from four months ago! Also passing through the exact same route, this time not driving up to Auckland with tears in our eyes after the experience and needing to sell the Lucida!
Along Maramarua, we stopped by Coro-gate Cafe to meet up with Angela and Bill, a lovely couple who offered us a roof after helping us look for the items when our car was broken into, and shared our story in hopes of finding some stolen items. Driving down to Te Aroha, we got invited in their warm house with amazing collections, met Panda (the adorable dog), then spent the time chatting away and watching Madeleine. Giving us some eggs and sausages, we then met her daughter Mandy and got taken to her house to meet the two grandchildren. Receiving a call, Angela's house was full of smoke due to the fireplace, and a few more minutes and would have caught on fire! Almost brought our bad luck to our hosts! Going back and helping remove the smell, we got served a beautiful warm dish of meat, leeks, turnip and mash, and watched some home movies which our hosts organised for the Queen's Birthday, their home display and their surprise wedding British themed, before hitting to bed.
          Day520
Raining heavily, waking up to toast with marmalade, at noon departed down South for the day. Passing by mountains and beautiful scenery along the SH26, we stopped by Gordon to view the flowing massive Wairere Falls, the biggest waterfalls on the North Island. 4.47km return walking track to view up close, 1hr 18minutes.
14:02 Weather opened up. Just perfect. Departed 16kms towards the Matamata. Welcome to Hobbiton Sign! Walking into the iSite looking like a Shire House, we took a picture with Gollum, then departed towards the Shire Rest Cafe. Arriving at 15:05, we obtained our tickets ($79 per person), and at 15:34 boarded the Hobbiton Bus and along with Mark and Big John toured around the Alexander Farm where the LOTR an The Hobbit were filmed.
Over the Gandalf Crossing, the Fireworks scene, the Dell with 9 hobbit holes, and along to Bag End, Samwise's hobbit hole, and the festival area, totalling 44hobbit houses. Pure perfection for true lotr fans! (not to mention used Kirsten as an example of a Hobbit to show film perspective). Sun setting, we walked in the Green Dragon Pub, had Old English Stout and Original Pale Ale, only brewed in Hobbiton, and twenty minutes later, we walked out with the lanterns switched on and dusk. Beyond words could express.
17:44 Departed towards Te Aroha. Arriving an hour later, we ate Toad in the Hole for dinner, and Rhubarb and Custard for desert whilst watching Mrs.Brown and the Boys.
          Day521
Having some breakfast made, at 11:00 we drove off to Te Aroha Central, and looked around some 2nd hand shops, Countdown for some snacks, then walked to the Domain, and along the Mokena Geyser, which was erupting exactly as soon as we got there.
Morrinsville - Stopped by Repco and the Warehouse (a great deal of 7l powered cooler for just $9.97 - price error instead of $34.97), we then drove back to Te Aroha, weather playing up of rain and sunshine.
Sorting out the car stuff, and placing everything in it's place, we got served beef and roast vegetables with gravy, then ate Plum Crumble with Vanilla Ice-Cream whilst watching a few more good episodes of Mrs. Brown before heading to bed.
          Day522
Mount Maunganui - Name of the large lava dome which was formed by the upwelling of rhyolite lava about two to three million years ago. It is officially known by its Māori name Mauao, but is colloquially known in New Zealand simply as The Mount.
Finalising all the stuff, we were given some English breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, then after saying our goodbyes, departed around 12:25, having Angela, Bill and Panda bid us farewell and wishing us luck over a megaphone whilst driving away!
Stopping by Mandy's place to say goodbye to the kids, we met a couple who offered us a couch to sleep on for tonight's in Papamoa. Raining heavy, at 12:54 Departed, and passed just right under a rainbow!
13:31 Welcome to Bay of Plenty! Driving over the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Ranges, at 14:10 Arrived at Mount Maunganui. Tracking around the base, after 3km we started climbing up to the Summit via the Wa way, viewing the Lookout. Locating a Geocache Kei Hea Te Ika? (World-wide outdoor Treasure Hunt) we made our way down via the 4wd Track whilst the sun set behind the Matakana Island and the clouds. Total 8.12km.
Stopping by New World, then Domino's in Tauranga, at 18:35 headed to The Strand for a 'Winter Nights, Winter Lights' event. Viewing a fire show at 19:00, and a Light Show at 19:30, we then walked around the food stalls, and at 20:10 started making our way to Papamoa to meet Andrew and his partner Karen to sleep for the night. Watching TV and sharing experiences and chatting, at 22:50 hit to bed for the night.
          Day523
A beautiful croissant with ham and cheese for breakfast, we spent the morning talking with our friendly hosts, and around 10:55 departed towards Bayfair Shopping Centre, viewing our first Woolworths and KMart in NZ, Countdown, 123 Shop, and Farmers.
12:51 Set our way to Rotorua - 71kms, passing by Te Puke (and Kiwi 360 - a huge monument showing a Kiwi fruit, gold and green on each side), Paengaroa, along the SH33, Okere Falls, passing Lake Rotoiti, and stopped at Hamurana Springs Recreational Reserve. Having our first cook-out since we left the farm, we made Fusilli with Diced Tomato, Cottage Cheese and Chicken, and being surrounded by a lot of black swans
16:24 Looking for a place to sleep, we drove back to Okere Falls Trout Pool Reserve, walked the 2minute circuit walk to view the Falls flowing from the Kaituna River, then as soon as the rain started, started playing some card games, put the seats down and cozied up, then watched 'The Demolished' till we went to sleep
          Day524
Rotorua - Embodies the spirit of Manaakitanga, the spirit of hospitality and generosity. Maori also believe Rotorua owes its thermal attractions to an early spiritual leader from the Te Arawa tribe, Ngatoroirangi. Rotorua also has 18freshwater lakes, all of which are volcanic origin - craters, calderas or valleys blocked by lava flows.
Quite a cold night! Setting off at 08:10.
08:22 Welcome to Rotorua - the stench!!
Stopping by the Redwoods Forest, we walked 1.2km around the majestic trees, then headed to Ohinemutu Maori Village; a nice small quiet village, with thermal water pools, a cultural Maori House, and St. Faith Church, with many geysers of sulphur pouring out everywhere you look!
10:31 Headed to Kuirau Park, viewed mudpools, sat down in the foot baths, enjoying the warm natural water all to ourselves, and viewed tens of geo-thermal pools around the park, covering up our nose occasionally due to the sulphur smell!
Heading towards Countdown, SCA, Pak N Save, Reduced to Clear and The Warehouse, we then drove to Whakarewarewa Mountain Bike Trail, for a $2 hot shower, back to the Warehouse to return the Powered Cup as it wasn't working, and finally set our way to The Lakes.
15:23 Viewing Blue Lake (Lake Tikitapu) first, we then stopped at a Lookout, seeing both Blue Lake and Green Lake (Lake Rotokakahi) amongst the forest trees. What a beautiful 360degrees view.
30kms towards Lake Okaro, passing Te Urewera Ranges. We set the bed up, and as soon as we started to boil the water for some pasta, had a guy give us a freshly caught Trout. Quickly frying it whilst the sun set, the fish tasted beautifully.
18:02, sleeping inside the car all set up for the first time. Watched Sing Street, and at 21:00 hoped to keep warm throughout the night.
          Day525
Lake Taupō - largest lake in Australasia, roughly size of Singapore, also world's most active supervolcano, located right in the middle of the North Island.
Watched the sun rise from the car!
Hands almost freezing off, at 8:53 drove off 4mins passing Kaingaroa Forest in Waiotapu to walk 500m to Rainbow Mountains (Maunga Kakaramea) Crater Lake. Sky blue lake, beauty! Next headed to Waiotapu Mud Pools, which are 60°-80°.
09:45 Set 51kms to Huka Falls Lookout, along the SH5. Arriving at 10:20, we drove off to Taupō iSite and the Library to charge some electronics, and nibbled on the remaining chicken breast.
12:15 Headed to Whakaipo Bay Recreation Reserve, North of Lake Taupō. Playing some cards, and killing time, around 15:00 we started to cook just incase it started to rain, and made some Fusilli with Sausages in Cottage Cheese and Tomato Sauce. Chilling in the car, we watched Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot once it got dark, and hoped to not have a cold night as the past couple of days.
          Day526
Departing at 08:50, we drove 15kms to Taupō, bought some snacks from Countdown, fuelled up, and at 09:43 set on a 193km journey towards Opitiki to drive around the East Coast.
10:28 Forest Road along Kaingaroa Forest closed. Having several small detours to find a road that leads to a State Highway, we stopped at Butcher's Pool for a rest, and headed back out. Fuelling up at Benny Bee Rotorua with a $5 discount coupon from Gull, we set off once again on a 158km drive to Opitiki, passing Kaingaroa Forest, and onto Eastland.
12:06. Stopped at a rest stop at Lake Aniwhenua. Solar panelled showers, clean toilets, tables, bins, sunshine and peaceful, we decided to stay here for the rest of the day. Eating some Shapes, we chilled in the sunshine, and around 14:30 made some Fettuccine with Tomato Sauce and Sausages. Still enjoying the view, we unfortunately had to lock ourselves in the car due to the hundreds of sandflies circling us. Watching the moonrise behind the hills around 18:04, we discussed our travel route, then watched Elvis and Nixon till we fell asleep.
          Day527
Freezing morning!
Waiting for the condensed windows to go down, at 08:22 we departed. Passing frosty grass, through thick mist along the towns and forests with visibility of just 50metres, viewed Lake Matahina, and arrived at Whakatāne at 09:40. Stopping by K-Mart, Countdown and the Library to charge some electronics, and viewing the Whakatāne Art Display, at 12:16 set off 45km to Opotiki, passing by Te Wairere Waterfall, Mataatua (Maori Meeting House), Te Ana O Muriwai Cave, and two Maori Wooden Kayaks.
13:06 Fuse out again of the Powercup Adaptor! Turning back 14kms to Whakatāne Warehouse, got the refund, bought a better Cup Adaptor from SCA, fuelled up, and finally at 14:21 departed!
Not going to make it by tonight to East Cape (over 3hours driving), we found a closer campsite, South of Opotiki. Trying to beat the sun setting, we first stopped at Te Ahiaua along the river and sea merging, cooked some Fusilli with Casserole Beef and Tomato Sauce, then drove towards the campsite, with the last 4km unsealed road and minor river crossings with a 2wd! Just 20m away from the campsite, the road was cracked and thought couldn't pass, however made it down the steep hill, no scratches around the car around 17:05. Beautiful river and bush camp called Boulders Campsite, in the Urutawa Forest/Te Waiti. Lighting up the open fire pit, we warmed ourselves up, viewed the glow-worms, and around 20:15 watched 'The Trust' and slept.
          Day528
Had a small hole in the mattress, spent all night slowly inflating, and by the morning almost flat. Enjoying the scenic views around us, at 08:24 started to drive up the 100m steep uphill. Placing flat rocks to level the potholes, after ten minutes we successfully started the 4km of unsealed road, passing three minor river crossings, and at 08:55 started the way back up to Ōpōtiki. 266km 10:12 Tokomaru Bay. Diverted 4km towards Waima to view some Ruins and an old Wharf, viewing along the way ruins of cars, abandoned houses, burnt caravans, and disowned kayaks and boats. The whole town looks isolated! Weather opening up, we nibbled on some Lemon Zest Shapes, and at 10:56 we continued the trip South.
307km 11:25 Tolaga Bay. Sun out, beautiful views of mountains and sea! Diverted 1.5km towards the Longest Wharf in New Zealand - 660m long! Hiked 3km return towards the Cooks Cove Lookout, or Opoutama, where Captain Cook and the Endeavour were welcomed. Departed at 12:48.

Stopped at Pak N Save, fuelled up, then drove to Midway Park, along Poverty Bay, where Captain Cook first landed in 1769. Trying to cook some Pasta with Meatloaf and Tomato Sauce in a very windy condition, after an hour, finally we sat down to eat. Quickly to The Warehouse to see how much the tent mattresses cost (passed as single mattress costs $35), we drove to some Spark Wifi to chat with our relatives, energy drink from Pak N Save, and at 17:58 all good to go!
77km, at 19:09 arrived at Ormond Free Camp in Mahia. All dark and full of sandflies, we managed to set the bed up, set points of interest for tomorrow's day, and around 20:30 nodded off.
          Day530
Napier (Ahuriri) - Rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake, the city is known for art deco landmarks.
Had something eating more than half of our Meatloaf during the night 😞
Sun and beautiful day, moon still visible.
Set the GPS towards Wairoa (43km) for a shower! Arriving at 08:55, we used the Wifi for an hour, then after driving around to find the Community Centre for a $2 hot shower, only found out that during Winter, weekend opening hours are from noon till 17:00! Stopping by New World for some cookies, we set off on a 116km drive at 11:04.
Stopping by Lake Tutira for a stretch 78kms later, we finally arrived in Napier at 12:36 - Art Deco Capital! Stopping by Soundshell (Public Toilets) for a $1 (very hot!) shower, we then drove along Marine Parade, and around 13:15 stopped by Norfolk Pine Free Camp. Killing time, we organised some stuff, played some card games, cooked some Fettucine with the remaining Meatloaf and Tomato Sauce, then once the sun setted, watched Tomorrowland, and set to sleep.
          Day531
Sunrise at 07:20 from the car, we departed at 08:10, Countdown, SuperCheap Auto for an AUX cable, fuelled up at Gull, enquired at VTNZ about the car's warrant, and off to Hastings at 09:25.
14degrees and sunny morning! Driving around to Jaycar, Warehouse, KMart, Clearance Shed, and Countdown, at 12:28 we were ready to hit the road, 187km towards Ohakune, rain and cold!
Passing Kaweka Forest, and Kuripapango, uphill and downhill, sharp turns, uphill and downhill, curvy lefts and right, slowly driving into the grey clouds.
14:12 Stopped by the Suspension Bridge, along the Rangitikei River, for lunch. Drizzling, we cooked Fettucine with Lamb Liver and Eggs in the car. Delicious! 80km left to Ohakune, at 15:45 we departed.
16:54 Ohakune! Greeted by a big carrot monument! Calling our Couchsurfing host, we drove towards Turoa Alpine Village and walked in the (adorable!!) mountain cabin. Being greeted by Anne (French), we also met up with Ryan (English), and Eva (German). Spending a good few hours talking and drinking Speight's Beer, we got driven to 'Kings', met up with other travellers living in the area, an expensive beer ($8.50 for a pint!), and a good talk, and around 23:15 headed back to the Cabin to sleep in our temporary room!
... Weather was very bad. Could not see any snow or mountains. Hopefully we can see more tomorrow here in Central North Island!
          Day532
Mount Ruapehu - An active stratovolcano, last erupted September 2007. 2797m high.
Mount Ngauruhoe - Another active stratovolcano, last erupted in 1977. 2291m high. Also commonly known as Mount Doom from LOTR.
Departing from the cabin around 09:15, we drove off to the iSite to gather some information, viewing Mount Ruapehu with snow along the way. Around 10:24, driving up Ohakune Mountain Road in Tongariro National Park, we parked halfway up the hill, amongst the settling snow around the mountains and grass. 3degrees. Taking a few pictures amongst the beautiful and picturesque white snow (unfortunately we couldn't really see Mount Ngauruhoe due to the mist - also known as Mount Doom), we drove to Mangawhero Falls, the location where Smeagol catches a fish in LOTR. Walking 250m return to the viewpoint, we later stopped by Waitonga Falls, 4.57km return. Started descending, making our way back to the Town, we heard a huge screeching noise coming from the car, thinking it was the brake pads! Hoping to get to a mechanic quickly, the screeching died down, and assumed it was just a small rock from the loose tarmac on the road. Phew!
Arriving at 13:05 at Mangawhero Forest, we walked our last trek for the day, including Rimu Walk, a total of 4.7km. Heading to the cabin at 14:15, we cooked some Fettuccine with Liver once again and eggs, warmed up, and around 15:30 headed to a Spark wifi, and bought some sweets from New World.
Back at the cabin, we chilled with Ryan and his friend from Uruguay, drinking beers, then headed to a pub called Suitcase, and after two games of pool, some laughter and some beers later, headed back home for our last night in Ohakune.
          Day533
2degrees with frost on car! After saying our goodbyes at 10:00, and rain finally stopped after all night pouring, we headed to the centre to fuel up and buy food for tonight. Driving along the SH4 towards Tongariro National Park, we stopped by the Tawhai Falls, 790m return walk, to the viewpoint of Gollum's pool, where he was caught whilst swimming by Faramir's rangers at Ithillein. Next stop - Whakapapa Village. Having the mountain Ruapehu suddenly coming in view, we were astonished in the greatness and majestic sight! Driving all the way up to the skii Resort, Iwikau Village, stopping along some lookouts and a mini snowball fight with each other, the sun shone brightly, reflecting blindly. We stared in awe, words cannot describe the beauty of both mountains, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom). Quickly stopping by the Info Point to view the museum about the volcanoes, native animals, and history of the place, along with running into an ex-colleague, Victor, at 13:30 we finally made our way on the long journey towards New Plymouth.
Driving along the beautiful landscape of rugged mountains, rivers and cliffs, passing thousands of sheep, stopping along Piriaka lookout, and along towards Taumaruiti. Having a soft serve after so long from McDonalds, and buying from New World, we caught the road known as Forgotten World Highway around 14:43, with more dramatic landscape!
17km into the highway, we stopped at Ohinepane Campsite, in Aukopae. Making some burgers with eggs, salad and crisps, we enjoyed playing some card games, waited for the sun to set, then watched Zoolander 2, before we went to bed.
          Day534
A night of full on rain and thunder!
Finally managing to close the bed and set everything in its place from inside the car as couldn't get out, at 09:23 we continued our way along the Forgotten World Highway.
Passing by what feels like a Lost World, cows, pigs and sheep, beautiful lookouts, gravel road, an old tunnel, slips and washouts, a ghost town, many waterfalls, the Republic of Whangamomona (where we paid $2 each to get our Certificate of Identity stamped!) railways, and rocks in the middle of the road.
12:48 Stratford! Driving towards the Elizabethan Clock Tower, we waited till 13:00, and heard the Clock play Romeo and Juliet verses, with figurines of both peeping out. Laundromat next to wash and dry our clothes ($10), we stopped by New World hoping to grab something quick to eat as rain would not stop, and set to Egmond National Park, close to Mount Taranaki to sleep for the night. Arriving at 16:00, we made some bread with half a chicken and some salad, and once it got dark, made the bed to watch a film. Pitch black, and felt something not right, we couldn't help feel a sense of danger, so we decided to go with our instinct and drive up 6km more up North towards the iSite, wind blowing hard and ice rain, and watched 'Whats the Worse that Could Happen', and fell asleep around 22:00 feeling much safer than before.
          Day535
What a night! Raining ice heavily, very strong wind, thunder and cold! Managing to place the car stuff in it's place whilst still raining, we drove out of Egmond National Park, and headed towards New Plymouth around 09:00. Buying some breakfast cookies from Countdown, we drove around the City, finally found unlimited parking, and went to the Library to charge some stuff hoping the rain would eventually stop. 12:18 Headed towards SuperCheap Auto, rain occasionally drizzling, we drove South to the free Brooklands Zoo. Viewed the Tufted Capuchin, Meerkats, Indian Ringneck Parakeet, Red Winged Parrot, Superb Parrot, Australian King Parrot, Lady Amherst Pheasant, Brolga, roaming Llamas, and the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. Getting hungry, we drove parallel to the Coastal Walkway, and onto the scenic Lake of Rotomanu. A beautiful drive around the area, and viewing the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, we pulled over, and cooked some Penne with Burgers and Tomato Sauce. Started to rain as soon as we started eating! 16:10 Drove back to the Centre, and walked around the Town, walking in diversity of shops, and once dusked walked to McDonalds for some soft serve. Quickly popping by Countdown 30mins before shutting at 20:30, we bought some cheap bread and reduced sandwich ham for tomorrow's breakfast, then drove back to the Park to watch 'The Boss', rain back on now, and hit to bed.
          Day536
Clear skies! And a warm night!
Driving around Lake Rotomanu, we made some breakfast, Garlic and Herb Focaccia with Ham and Salad. Hearing a new car sound, a hard clicking, we decided to visit an AA Centre, which advised the Alternator Belt was split. An hour later, and a bill of just $83.98 (just $40 labour!), at 11:06 we finally set off, now raining!
Surf Highway, or SH45, we found a fruit stall, bought $2 bag of oranges and grapefruits, and first stopped at Cape Egmont Lighthouse, overlooking the Tasman Sea, windy but sun out. Around 12:35, we made our way along the Highway towards Opunake Lookout, 280km from Auckland, 220km from where we are heading to - Wellington, 2000km from Sydney, and 20000km from London!
13:20 Continued our way, and stopped at Hawera for Pak N Save. Ended the Surf Highway, and onto SH3. Driving towards a black cloud, we drove past the Garden of Tutunui, sculpture of a whale's bones, and as soon as we drove down towards Patea Beach, Mana Bay, heavy rain started pouring, barely letting us see. Waiting for it to calm down, we cooked some Penne with Casserole Beef and Tomato Sauce (trying Red Yams for the very first time), then continued our way at around 16:10. Passing by Waverley, we drove onto Waiinu Beach, and the campground Nukumaru Recreation Reserve, very windy but no rain. Setting up the bed, we decided where to go to next, planned roughly some route to Wellington, and hopped into bed, hoping this rain stops as it is not letting us enjoy the scenery in peace.
          Day537
Hearing a dog whimper at 07:00, Kirsten went out looking for it in the heavy wind, to no success. After a night of ice and rain, the campground wasn't too bad to drive on, and drove off to Whanganui. Arriving at 08:35, we drove past Virginia Lake with the many swans and ducks, then got to our daily routine - a chain supermarket for breakfast - Pak N Save. Buying some bread and cheese, we made some breakfast, then drove around some shops to view possibilities of a new thin mattress. Driving along Victoria Avenue, and Moutoa Gardens, we stopped at the Whanganui Regional Museum, free of charge. Viewing the 'House of Bones' (a room filled with skeletons and skulls), The Street (shops back in the early 1900s), Lindauer Gallery (an artist who painted important Maori's), The Maori Court (viewing locals customs, history, instruments, and canoes), Bugroom, Moa Open Storage (all collective bones of the animal), and other war related.
Driving towards Kowhai Park, we cooked Penne with Casserole Beef in Tomato Sauce, then about 15:40 drove off to McDonalds for some wifi. Sheltering from the cold outside (although not raining, it is very windy!), around 19:00 decided to snack on a Domino's $5 Value Pizza, then after a nice evening drive around the town, stopped at tonight's rest stop, a carpark between two streets, in the centre of town, watched 'London Has Fallen', and slept around 23:30.
          Day538
Last month of Winter! 1st August :)
Departing at 07:30, we set the GPS to Palmerston North -73kms. Stopping by Whangaehu Rest Stop, we made some bread with leftover Brie and Ham, and continued our way.
08:27 Bulls - A town like no Udder! A small village with puns. Cafe called - Coffee in the MOOve, Green Grocer - Veget-a-bull, Candyshop - Irresist-a-bull!
08:50 Palmerston North! Making our way to the Library (trying to find a 1hr parking), paid $1 for a hot shower each, then used the computer and some wifi, moving the car to another 1hr parking to have more time. 11:30 Raining once again. Drove around the town, trying to find a second hand right hand rear door, to replace the rusty one we have and eliminate having water drip in when rains. Beng ping-ponged between 6 wreckers, to no luck, at 14:10 we tried to find a substitute for our burst mattress. Stopping by Para Rubber ($65 for a double foam 'mattress'), we drove to KMart, and after finding big dog cushions, decided to opt for those! x3 for $12 each, and very warm and cozy! Woof! The usual Countdown and Pak N Save, we drove off Victoria Esplanade Park, now sunshine, but had a shelter with boiling water and a washing sink! Luxury! Cooking Linguine with Garlic Meatloaf and Eggs, we relaxed at the park, then drove off to Manawatu Tawa Scenic Reserve, along the SH3, viewing the Te Apiti Wind Turbines along the drive. Playing some cards, we waited for the sun to set, then set the bed up, planned out our route, then hit to bed.
          Day539
After having a car pulling up right infront of us with heavy lights at 23:30, it spent some few minutes there, then left, hoping it was just the Police, but spent the rest of the night slightly on edge.
Making some breakfast at 07:30, we drove back to Palmerston North, and headed towards The Esplanade, Bird Park Sanctuary. Sun shining and cloudless day finally! Viewing many birds, pheasants, Whio, Black Duck and Pāteke, at 09:30 headed towards the Library to find some Wwoofing for the next couple of weeks till we sort our passports in Wellington (accommodation is sky high!).
Making our way towards Kelvin Grove for Countdown, we then drove to Victoria Esplanade Park once more to get some shelter and cook some food. Fusilli with Meatloaf and eggs, we shopped for some seat covers from The Clearance Shed ($25), ate some soft serve at McDonalds, fuelled up, and at 16:04 said goodbye to Palmerston North.
Not a single drop of rain today! Driving along the Highway 56, pass Himatangi, Foxton (and viewed the De Molen flour Windmill), Levin and Ohau. Left turning into Manakau, we arrived at Waikawa Reserve for the night. Dressing the seat covers, making the bed, sun went down and sat down under the shelter next to the huge fire, warming ourselves up, spending from 18:30 till around 21:00 talking with Linton a Moari guy currently camping, sharing experiences and having a laugh.
          Day540
Breakfast sandwich, and after waiting for the rain to calm down, departed at 09:17. Passing by Otaki and Waikanae, we stopped by Countdown and the Library, and at 11:20 departed towards Cape Palliser!
Driving along the Akatawara Road, Tararua Forest Park, hilly and very windy road.
12:23 Stopped along the Akatawara River in Birchville. A filming location of River Rohan from the LOTR series.
12:28 The filming location where Aragorn was washed ashore and woken up by the horse.
13:02 Te Marua Lookout - Two huge lakes which are Wellington's water reservoirs.
13:09 Kaitoke Regional Park - Rivendell!
Unfortunately majority of the film set was graphics, and the few props were removed after the filming was done to preserve the National Park. Passing by the Courtyard, we could picture a few movie scenes from around the trees which are still standing, and the Archway which is standing as a reminder of Rivendell itself.
Staying at the DOC shelter, we cooked some Fusilli with Steak and Kidney, and Mince Sauce. Sun finally out, we set way to Cape Palliser! Driving past Featherston, Martinborough and Pirinoa, we drove along the South Shore (beautiful scenery and amazing views!), sun setting, and spotting Seals along the road! Taking pictures but not getting too close (they stink and gnarl at you!!), we drove to the Lighthouse around 17:30, climbed 249 steps, and felt on the edge of the world, red skies, and beautiful scenery! Slowly driving back - 6kms - towards Ngawi Campsite along the beach front, hearing the sea splash, watched the movie "Jupiter Ascending", then hit to bed under a blanket full of stars; Southest part of the North Island, and Southest we have ever been in the world so far!
          Day541
Waking up to grey clouds and just a bit of drizzle, we made omelette bread for breakfast, and set off once more to the Seal Colony! What a stench but what funny plump mammals! Having fun hearing them growl when we get too close, at 10:33, started making our way back towards some civilisation. Past sheep, horses, cows, and bulldozers pulling boats, we drove along Lake Ferry Road, onto Kahutara Road, and straight to Featherston, without any plans further from here, and not knowing where to stay in Wellington (Sunday have a meeting to take our biometrics for our passports). Finally connecting to some internet and reception, we received amazing news from our ex-host Angela that we had a host fixed for us for the weekend North of Wellington. Contacting the guy (Maltese!), we were given the address, and started making our way slowly.
13:40 Onto Upper Hutt, we stopped by Pak n Save, finally fuelled up, and drove to Porirua - Harbour Bay - beautiful coastal drive and past Belmont National Park. Trying to make some Spaghetti with Mince Sauce and Steak & Kidney in the wind, around 16:30 started making our way to our new host's house in Waitangirua.
Meeting Louis and his twins, we were graciously welcomed, spent some good hours chatting in Maltese and talking about Maori culture and New Zealand ways, cuddling Haka the cat and Coco-kabana the dog, and after eating a delicious pizza and ice-cream chocolate, headed to a warm bed safe out of rain and wind!
          Day542
Pure freezing cold! Waking up to some fruit breakfast and cookies in milk, we spent the morning looking for a rear car door to replace the rusty one we have to be able to pass the Warranty. Phoning a good few wreckers around Wellington Region, around 12:30 headed out (after trying to figure out how to lock the house!) towards Lower Hutt, Wingate. Obviously raining now, we stopped by Pick-a-Part, $2 entrance, and found two rear doors of a newer version to our Nissan. Not sure whether the door fits, and no one to ask, we took pics to see if they look the same, drove to a panel beater to enquire how to tell if they match, then after driving back, measured the doors, and decided to give it a try for $89.
Back at the house around 15:30, we started dismantling the door immediately as it was not raining. PERFECT FIT! No more rain seeping in and hopefully no stress to pass the WOF! Warming up in the house, watching TV, and nibbling on KFC, before we knew it, it was passed midnight, and headed to bed.
          Day543
6degrees. Going to the Saturday Flee Market around the corner in Waitangirua, viewing very cheap fruit, vegetables, and food stalls, we then walked to Pizza Slices, and ordered a Pizza Pepperoni ($5.99), warming ourselves up and protecting from the rain.
Not even 11:30, we went back to the house, and spent some good time looking for potential work or woofing, to let Winter pass rather than going to the South Island now. Chilling watching TV with Louis and his kids, also receiving amazing news that we got accepted for Tuesday to start woofing with this family, at 16:00 we all headed off to North City Shopping Centre, then drove to meet his relatives to celebrate a birthday gathering for three! A warm cosy home from the cold outdoors, we enjoyed meeting new people, some of which Maltese, surrounded by cute dogs, chatting, eating delicious food and stuffing our faces with more desert. Feeling very gracious treated like family, we then went back to Louis' home, watched some TV, drank some beer, and now 4degrees, headed to bed.                            Day54
Getting ready, at 10:12 we departed the house, and drove past Wellington CBD, and onto Brooklyn. Meeting the Maltese Consulate at 10:50, we got our biometrics taken for our new passports, pictures taken, and after a few good talks and listening to Maltese songs, at 12:10 we left towards the City. Mad roads and traffic, we got a few wrong roads, no free parking, complicated routes, and hunger setting in, decided to drive off to KFC in Mount Victoria instead, and ordered x4pieces, x2bread rolls, x2 potato and gravy, x2 chips and x2 Krushers for just $14.90 (discounts from an online Coupon).
14:40 Drove off the Mount Victoria Park, walked around some walking tracks, looked for the Hobbit hole where Frodo and the Hobbits hid from the Nazgûl, then drove off to the Lookout on top of the Mountain, overlooking the whole city, planes landing in the airport, ships in the harbour, and snow on the mountain plains.
Driving back to Waitangirua, we sat indoors watching TV, warming ourselves up in the 2degrees weather outside, but still eating some ice-cream and drinking beer.
          Day545
Spending the morning relax indoors away from the rain and cold, around 13:30 went to Countdown and Pak N Save in Porirua, and cooked some Timpana (Baked Pasta with Puff Pastry) for ourselves and our host Louis, later watched some episodes on Sky TV till we hit the bed.
          Day546
7degrees, but sun can be seen through the clouds!
After some breakfast crumpets with cookie ice-cream, we started preparing moving the stuff back in the car, shopped at Pak n Save Porirua, and after having Leon trying to fix the door window's motor as would not work, Kirsten cooked Linguine with Smoked Ham and Eggs. Waiting for our host to return back from work, we unfortunately had to leave before we said our goodbyes as we would have been late for our new experience ahead - WWOOFing in Raumati.
Departing at 17:20, we fuelled up (Pak N Save still have an 8c/ltr off offer), and drove along the Kapiti Coast with the sun setting and beautiful red sky. Arriving at our hosts at 18:00, we got greeted by Angus, Tiana and their two kids Lucas (8years old) and Maiah (5years old). Chatting for a while and being shown around the house, we settled down, and after spending the evening talking about our travels and Malta, headed to our new warm and cosy bed!
          Day547
Alarm off at 06:50, we ate some delicious prepared breakfast - Porridge with Caramelized Banana, and some Dutch Biscuits with butter and Quince Sauce. Starting the day by cleaning up the house, taking out the laundry, making beds, vacuuming and cleaning around. Leon spent most of his time sanding the window pane, before we knew it, we had done our four hours of work. Stopping at 10:30 for a Cheesecake Break, and at 13:00 for Lasagna Lunch, we embraced the gorgeous day outdoors, and went for a drive.
Visiting the Esplanade, and viewing Raumati South Beach, we drove towards Nikau Reserve, past Paraparaumu, and walked uphill 800m past dense trees, towards a lovely scenic lookout over the Beach and town. Sitting down eating some oranges and grapefruit, we decided to go down through a different route, finding Geocaches along the way. Climbing trees, past mud, through spider webs and past branches, we located three, and after an eventful afternoon headed to the House. Sitting down with our host Tiana, her dad and the two kids, we ate Hawaiian and Pepperoni Dominoes Pizza with chips and salad, ate a Dutch desert, played a game of Tri-Ominoes, and after washing the dishes, relaxed on the sofa next to the fireplace.
          Day548
Routine - Breakfast Porridge and Apple Sauce, and toast very similar to the Maltese Bread (Our host was very kind in attempting to bake the bread for us, and turned out very yummy and close to the actual taste!), we started the housework, and both continued sanding the window frames. Having a Cheesecake for Tea Break, and an Egg Toast for lunch, we got ourselves ready by 13:30, and headed out to go Geocaching in the beautiful weather once again!
Driving around town, we first drove to Jeep Road Park, where volunteers have an orchard and plant different trees, and found our first Geocache. Enjoying the Sun, we decided to drive towards Raumati Beach, walked along the Shore, and found another two. Viewing the South Island for the first time due to the clear sky, we then drove along the Marine Parade, and up to MacLean Park, and after parking the car, walked along the Paraparaumu Beach, and bought ice-creams from the Ripples Cafe for $4.50 each (Double Cone (Cookies and cream/Hokey Pokey)(Boysenberry and TigerTime). Another Geocache along the 1km walk along the Shore, we drove up to Waikanae Estuary Scenic Reserve, walking around 1.5km and logging Caches, viewing many birds, and the sun setting along the Waikanae River meeting the Ocean.
Quickly driving back to the House for dinner, we arrived at 17:45, met an ex-helpx from Philippines called Richell, and enjoyed a nice warm meal - beef with roasted vegetables, and Cheesecake for desert, relaxing till we went to bed at 22:40.
          Day549

Spending from 08:00 - 12:30 cleaning the house and tidying up, and continued sanding the window frames. A quick soft serve at Maccas in Paraparaumu, by 16:15 we arrived back home, played with the children, met Tiana's brother, a welcome back to her husband Angus, and sat down to eat delicious chicken wraps, hot chocolate for desert, played Tri-ominoes, and relaxed on the sofa till we hit to bed.
